Question by Research Rookie: How do you get school prinicipals’ permission to conduct research in their schools?
I have the County School District permission, but the prinicpals declined without even listening to me.Help!

I live in North Atlanta area and a friend is the principal at a high school. It is his responsibilty to all faculty, students, visitors, etc., to provide a safe, secure, non-bias environment for our young people to be educated. The school provides a non-threatening social environment allowing for students to develop under the laws and guidelines established.

He, as principal, has total control of the school environment. There are established laws, rules and regulations he must consider. His policy in his school does not allow any type of research to be conducted. Although the district approved each school adopts and submits operation procedures, in turn, approved by the district. Why? I will use my city, Atlanta, GA. Our city school system services kids from the “upper class” incomes located in the North sector to the middle/lower incomes, mainly in the South sector. The city school system operates under federal, state, and its district rules and regulations but because of the diversity, North to South, due to gang violence, theft, fights, etc. each principle must adopt appropriate guidelines as well for their individual schools.

Understanding this should give some guidance for you and another school(s) in your area may allow your research. Allowing you or someone else in for research also opens the door for others as well. In other words, you are allowed and mayby someone else is denied then the school and school district have a possibility of “law suits”, “protests”, etc., so why should any school take this risk and “upset” the learning process for students?

My opinion, go back to the county school district. Speak to someone about your research and get guidance on schools allowing this to occur. You may also find someone to call schools for you and schedule appointments on your behalf.
